Do Not Disturb: I’m Trying to Read

Why do people criticize books? Is it the same as movies? Sometimes I watch a movie with barely any story, and I still enjoy it. Other times, I poke holes in the writing and the screenplay. Is it just random?

The only book I truly disliked was "One Night at the Call Center." I remember it physically affecting me, it gave me a headache. And yet, I powered through to the end. No other book has done that to me. Not even close.

I bring this up because anytime I look up a book on r/books, there’s always someone complaining. Maybe they’re just advanced readers. Or maybe it’s the algorithm, we know from twitter that complaining gets more attention. Rage bait is engagement bait.

This year, I started reading a lot of books, alas, didn’t finish most of them. Not because they were boring, but because they were competing with YouTube, Netflix, and Instagram. I even tried buying physical books to escape the scroll. But let’s be honest. How can a physical book compete with the luxury of reading on Apple Books on my MacBook Air, lying in bed with Ms. JoJo snoozing beside me? Yes, I like making the cake and eating it too.

Maybe it’s the genre. Maybe it’s a hormonal imbalance from too much junk food. Maybe it’s just bad writing. Or maybe it’s all of the above. Maybe one day I’ll figure it out. Until then, I’ll keep reading. Currently, it’s Do Not Disturb. Fitting, isn’t it?
