The Algorithmic Enemies

When someone asks me what my hobbies are, I list strength training, social dancing, reading, playing board games, writing and watching sports. However, these habits ebb and flow with motivation.

A few months ago, I was reading fiction for many hours a day and I was posting about them here too. After three novels, the Football season started. College Football and NFL occupied my weekends, and on the other days, I watched game reviews and predictions on YouTube.

Walking JoJo on a set schedule was easy during the winter months and gave me a good workout window. The hot summer days and late night walks disrupted my sleep schedule and I cut out the regular gym sessions. In the last few months, I gained a lot of weight by getting take-out and eating candy. Now that it is cold again, my early sleep, early morning workouts, and meal prep are back.

Reading is still my favorite hobby, but this hobby of delayed gratification has to compete with all the algorithms that give instant dopamine hits. Once the auto-play has run its course and I get bored, that is when I reflect and come back to reading, the one thing that anchors me. Reading and home cooking feel the same to me — they both take patience and fight the same algorithmic enemy.
